Our Evacuation Chairs Meet Requirements of NFPA

Summary of NFPA Article, from Volume 99 No. 2 March/April 2005
The evacuation chairs from CSS are simple yet effective devices for evacuating the moblity impaired up and down stairwells.
In a recent issue of the NFPA Journal, the following summarized article clearly defines what type of equipment is necessary to evacuate disabled persons in an emergency situation. The evacuation chairs from CSS meet these these basic Guidelines. CSS emphasizes that most evacuation chairs are not designed to transport both up and down stairwells. This is a critical point because every emergency situation is different. It is possible that evacuation may be required from basements or underground floors of a building thus creating the need to evacuate upstairs. The following paragraph simply states the basic requirements for equipping your building with evacuation devices where stairs are involved:

" Determine Appropriate Equipment: Depending on the type of building and its obstacles, such as stairs, certain equipment and signage may be needed. For example, portable lightweight evacuating chairs may be needed to help wheelchair users up and down stairs. Ramps may useful in negotiating one or two steps..."

This article also makes the point that, legally, all places of public accomodation must "provide alternative means for clients with mobility impairment to be safely evacuated... without using an elevator."
This article covers these key points of safe building evacuation:
• Knowing your liability
• Developing a plan for evacuation
• Installing adequate equipment
• Staff training and education
• Coordinating with local emergency personnel.
